I don't think it was about "making an effort"....I made the effort to get up at 8am, looked out the window, nothing but rain and cold...Not enjoyable for driving, or hanging out, or much of anything...

Absolutely not, and I'll explain why.
I'm probably going to do 3-4 events this year. Each event requires hours sitting on google maps making notes and conceptualizing a path. Then I have to spend a full weekend day actually driving the route. Then, I come back and have to go over my original notes, ones I made on the drive, and the map and create a finalized version. That plus the original planning time takes about a full weekday afternoon of staring at a PC screen and memorizing 30 turns and stopping points. Then, there's the event itself on a weekend.
So at this point, for just one event I have sacrificed both one Saturday/Sunday for a test run as well as another weekend day for the cruise itself, then spent another half-day at work doing the background stuff including going to the photocopy place, etc. Now multply that by 4. I end up giving away half of my summer free-time to provide you guys with something interesting to do. If I start adding rain dates that's now 4 additional weekends that I can't plan a trip, go anywhere with my friends, etc. Absolutely not happening.
And I still don't understand what is gained by staying in on a rainy day! If I wasn't in my dry car having a blast, I'd be in my dry home not having a blast. Seems like a no-brainer.

** maXbimmer Spring Cruise 2016: Sunday May 1st **
It's not about what is gained by staying in. For myself, it's simply being unable to enjoy the the event to its fullest. If I'm dedicating an entire day, I want to be having a blast on the scenic and fun roads and hang out with enthusiasts to the fullest. With inclement weather, the enjoyment goes down so much that it doesn't feel like it's worth spending the whole day out, not to mention gas, food, drinks, etc, then going back to work the next morning.
I recall doing a Fall cruise where it was wet/rainy and how it really lessened the fun factor and I came away feeling that it really wasn't worth it. I'd rather sit it out and have a lazy Sunday in that situation, but that's my reasoning behind it.
For those that went and still enjoyed themselves, props to you guys! We don't all have to have the same reasons or justifications for our decisions, what works for some of us may not for others and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
PS. Fil, your sig is freakin' massive.

My situation to a T. I've done rainy cruises in the past, they are really 6-7/10 due to the weather when a day with no rain (even if cooler/cloudier) is a 9-10/10.
I had two cars with full tanks, ready to go. I didn't even go out and party Saturday night, in *hopes* somehow the morons predicting the weather were, yet again, wrong. I woke up in sufficient time to look out the window only to see a miserable, rainy and cloudy day which in turn had me sipping wine in my PJ's all day doing some errands around the house.
In no way am I insinuating there should be rain dates. That's nuts from an organizer's stand point IMO as per reasons outlined by Jay.
I am super stoked to see there will be a "re-run" on a June Sunday! Can't wait and hope for good weather!

I don't see it that way! In no way is there need to re-organize everything from the ground up. The roads wont change much in 7 days, so we simply have next weekend as backup, in case things are bad the first try. But if that's too much to ask, i understand!

It's a time investment for the organizer; having to basically keep an extra four weekends free as back up in the summer is indeed a lot of personal time gone. Ie. If Jay wanted to go on a vacation, another event, or a trip, whatever - that stuff can't be rescheduled on a whim a week in advance if rain dates are to be taken up. In other words, those personal events pretty much cannot be planned at all then. Basically one event would occupy 3 weekends: 1 test run, 1 actual cruise, 1 rain date. That's almost a whole month's weekends dedicated to one single event. With four events, there goes the whole summer.
And there is also some reorganizing to be had: restaurant bookings/reservations for such a big group have to be moved around.

Yeah, but by not having a set date, Jay can be flexible with it, can decide if he wants to run it again and isn't committing to an extra date. I totally see where DB is coming from.
Personally, I had no problems running in the rain... yes it dampened wanting to take pictures, etc, but the driving was still great and a bit more of challenge.

This all comes down to personal preference. I hadn't gone to a cruise in a really long time. So having bought my M this winter I was hell bent on going to this event. Was it awesome... YES, did we have a blast... Yes, did Jay do an incredible job, HELL FRIGGEN YES!
But could it have been more fun had it not been pissing rain? No shit. I don't think its fair to sit back and complain or expect Jay to set aside a backup date. Even if he did, there will still be a ton of people saying oh I would have gone but popcorn was on sale at wal-mart... Jay organizes it, he sets the date. Rain or shine, you wanna go, go. If not you don't. I think it's ridiculous and ridiculously selfish to even bring up that Jay should make a backup date. I don't recall him being a maxbimmer bitch.
You did an awesome job planning the cruise and you've been doing it for many years. Those that went and show up time and time again appreciate your work man!

If you really want to go when the weather is nice then just get the route details from someone who went on the cruise, round up a few buddies who want to go, and do it on a weekend with nice weather. Then you'll also have the luxury of not having any d-bag drivers causing problems!
A friend and I did a 500km cruise last fall after cottage season was over and it was a blast not having to deal with other people's BS

I don't think you are understanding.
If I plan a cruise with a rain date, here's what I have to do:
- spend the weekend before the cruise driving the route
- reserve the following weekend for the event
- reserve the weekend AFTER THAT just in case you're all too prissy to drive in the rain
So are you guys seriously asking me to hold 3 consecutive summer weekends for this, every single time there's an event? Holy ****ing entitlement. That's like 75% of my summer.
I'm honestly pretty over this at this point. I'll decide later if I feel like doing these anymore.

I only see one person in this thread commenting about how it may not be a big deal to have a rain date. The rest agree that it's asking too much and accept that if we didn't go, then that's on us.
