Royal Red was a colour option for E39 M5's until 2002 when it was replaced by Chiaretto Red. I have a 2001 M5.

as mentioned a few posts up i bought the car used, so it came with the car, but from what i've read it appears to be an option, more prominent in europe probably.

That is a car that might, just might, convince me to buy a BMW product made more recently than 1995. Beautiful
Not sure about E39s, but the chrome was standard, and shadowline was optional in the older models in Europe. If you knew (know) what to ask for, you can get some interesting Euro options when you order a car from the factory. I know a guy that got the Euro-only rear window sunshade for his E46 that way. You have to convince the dealer though.

This one has the rear sun shade and pull up shades for the rear doors, but i believe for an M5 those are standard dealership options, could be wrong thou.

rear sunshade was a option on 98 E39's, it's one of the options I wish I had
shadowline trim was also a option starting from 98.
but there are a bunch of euro options which we can't get, but you can buy those parts online & install them yourselves.
