the BMWCCC, Trillium chapter runs these monthly autocrosses. The insurance company they use doen't require helmet use for autocrossing as long as the side windows are minimum half up.

I know there isn't alot of incidents when auto-x'ing but then again I would feel safer with a helmet then my window half way up.

helmets are optional.. you can wear them if you want. I'd probably recommend it in a convertible. The course is slow... all first gear (due to the small lot) but very technical.

Some would argue that, some would argue it provides a ballast to balance the car. I know at least a few guys who run faster times with a passenger.
