Here's an idea go play Forza build a car with all the mods and then put a race transmission on the vehicle. then change the final drive. what you will notice is that as your acceleration goes up your top speed goes down and vice versa. that improvement in acceleration is because your car now sits in the power band earlier at speed and your car would fall closer into the power band between gear shifts.

Imagine your power band is between 4000 and 6000rpm that is where the most torque and horsepower exists

if your in 3rd and change gears at 6000rpm in a car with a 3.23 your car may drop to 3600rpm

and then do the same with a 2.93 your car may drop to 3300rpm therefore taking you further away from your power band.

So what do you think a gear ratio does ... simply reduces the rpm of the driveshaft ? There is no multiplication of torque ?

FWIW I do agree the engine is now running at higher rpm for a given speed, and may be producing more HP

no increase what so ever in hp from this part only thing you get is higher rpm if you cant understand that its been explained really good by i think 2 people already with rpm being on the higher side if you look at the game forza or gran turismo you can set the final drive and if you look at the horsepower it doesnt change because it doesnt get effected you would have to specifically do engine or computer or exhaust work to only increase horsepower

you saying that a diff will increase horsepower is like saying bigger brakes will decrease horsepower

Great upgrade for a 328, put one in my vert, it provides you with an effective 20HP. Cheapest, most reliable 20HP you can but for a 328.

Arguenig over the terminology of "effective"

The car is quicker with the 3.38 diff, as it would being lighter or with more horsepower. He could have said it feels lighter...but he chose effective horsepower.

The 3.38 came in the e36 automatic m3 and was specifically geared to bring back some of the performance lost by the weight of the automatic. However you want to interpret the post, that differencial will improve performance, something a 4 post 328is rider could use.

I just wish I could have bought it at the time...I personally would enjoy the 3.38 and the effective horsepower and effective lightness it would add to my car!

Same hp same torque , just same power applied over a shorter time/shorter ratio.

gearing multiplies torque from the engine. thats how it works. shorter final drive = more effective torque at the wheels. theres no arguing against that. lol forza

if you cant understand the terminology then go read a book. No one is saying the engine itself is increasing power or torque with the shorter final drive...but at the wheels...there definitely is more torque being applied.
