Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil, or
Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil

Except that document is US market. Germany (and many other places) still spec's an LL-01 compliant oil for post 03/00 cars.

Not sure why the US recommendation is different, considering the US cars will never be driven as fast for as long as the German cars.

My car came with the BMW LL-01 5w30 document in the glove box. When I contacted BMW in Toronto, they faxed me a copy of their doc that holds the same recommendation as the German one, which is BMW LL-01 5w30 or equivalent meeting the LL-01 spec.

My copy of TIS is from 2011 and it also shows BMW LL-01 5w30 (or equivalent) for the post 03/00 cars.

This has got to be THE most polarized and controversial topic on M5board as well. Some guys want to burn you at the stake for not running TWS, others are adamant that the updated ring design cars really don't need it.

I don't think that 10W60 will work that well on a car that is driven in the winter. I doubt it will be easy to start at -30C with 10W60 in it.

TWS actually has surprising good cold temp performance. Not anything like Mobil 1 0w40, but pretty bloody good for an oil that is a 60-weight.

I am a firm believer that if the engine was designed for it, it should be getting it. You are right, it is one of the biggest debates. IF BMW NA says that I should, I will. My 09/99 and my 06/00 BOTH get 10W60. No IFS or BUTS. An extra 20-30 Dollars on oil changes won't put me in the poor house yet.. My biggest worry/piss off is the fuel consumption. We've both been doing more city than HWY (the opposite of before) and our fuel bills have doubled! Now that makes me angry and would be the only reason we would downsize to 1 M5 (my wife loves hers)!!!
