Ultimately all arguements aside. He was quoted a price that he felt was unfair. So he posted on the forum his opinion. Part of the responsibility of a member is to protect other members from spending too much. That should be a law. lol...

Indeed you can find a whole motor that runs for less than double that price.

Better yet just get an old m30 and pop a turbo on it... it'll last at least 20 years longer. And it's cheaper to run.

Man I'm right on the edge of restarting the 'newer is always better' arguement... but I won't bother this time.

I think 500.00 for a complete motor is fair. but that is silly to ask 950. for a short block.

Maybe for a private seller. Consider that most reputable shops would charge at least $300-500 to JUST remove an engine from a car, it would make it a FREE part. If the removal alone costs so much, i dont see how you can expect parts and labour for the same $$$, unless you cut wires and torch off bolts, like junkyards.

In the ad it says M52B28 engine from an E36 328i, Feb 99 built date and VIN AV22396.

Three things.
1. Last E36 328i was built in April 1998
2. That VIN is for a 1998 328i. September 1997 to be exact.
3. I'm pretty sure(this is not 100%) that E36 never came with an aluminum block in North America.

They shouldn't be charging the customer to remove it from their own junk car. They make money on the car they buy cheap and then part out. The whole point is someone gets the part for a fair price and they double or triple their money from the car purchase.

300 - 500 for some kid in overalls getting paid $12 an hour to remove an engine? Does it take clevis 25 hours to pull the engine? No, to maximize profit they get $12 clevis to do the work in 4 hours, and they charge $500 and pocket the profit.... mmmmm profit!

When they buy the parts car... "oh this car isn't even worth $500!" "look see that rust there? I can't give you more than $800 for that" [rubbing fingers in anticipation].

that price is absurd. Props to OP for informing members about this shady place. I dont see any issue with the post.

I know most of us know these places exist but Ive seen the ads these guys have and have thought about contacting them for the odd thing. Now I know they are just like the rest of the garbage out there.

It's no surprise really, all businesses run on the same model. I used to work for one of the first web design companies in Ottawa, we were a branch of a larger printing company.

I worked on sites that they priced out upwards of 20k. What were they paying me? $10 an hour at the time. I did all the front end work, another guy did the back end and our manager coordinated and did QA. I think it took us about 3 days. I'm sure in total the labour was under $1000 for us three employees.

Welcome to the pyramid scheme called the economy.

This is why - if you can... do it yourself and beat them at the game.

it is like a feedback, if I find a place that sells good used parts at a good price, I post it
,so that members can benefit;so OP's post is no different, he found a place that is asking too much for a used engine so he posted it.

Any business mark up their margin differently and on used parts the mark up can be higher; shop and pay a little extra with a reputable business that offers good customer service and warranty
