Steve: Great swap, great thread! Thanks for sharing!

I've read it a couple times with much interest. I'm currently at the parts gathering stage of my swap. Got a Z3M S54 left engine mount bracket on the way. I was wondering what you used for the passenger side? Stock? Euro evo?
Also did you use for a driveshaft?

Thanks!

Kevin

My E36 S54 Swap Thread

Thanks for the kind words Kevin. I got pretty excited when I saw you picked up an E36. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

For the passenger side you can use the original mount arm. It's the same for euro and North American cars. As for the drive shaft, the car is still 5 speed so I used the original one. If you go with the 6 speed you can use and automatic e36 m3 shaft (it's a little bit short but not by much) or have a custom one made. The auto shaft works fine so no need to waste money on a custom one.

According to my calculations the airbox should be shipping out this week (fingers crossed). Unfortunately this means it will not be installed for Bimmercruise. I was really hoping to have it on for this event but oh well. SiR I have not been able to make it out to an event yet. I want to really try and make it to the October school though... maybe an auto-x will suffice. I'm really going to try! Weekends are all I have to relax at the moment but hopefully I can suck it up and make it to the track before winter arrives.

Given the latest pricing of e46 M3's what do you figure the swap costs now ?

About the same.. the motors are still going for the same price. The S54's will hold their value really well since you can stuff these into pretty much any BMW chassis. I would love to build a turbo s54 in another chassis. I just love the S54's willingness to rev. Reminds me of a big Honda B/K series. Lots of fun!!

ya the prices for some of these engines are way high imo. of course itll vary by yr and mileage but some of the older ones people want way too much.

Awesome thread man, this is a swap I am looking into, I totally agree with your reasons why this is better than an LS swap, in terms of the engineering and the car "deserving" to have a "real" M engine in there! Plus I'd almost rather have a n/a 400+hp engine with those Velocity stacks like Mike Borroughs, than a turbo'd engine. I'll be studying your thread for more swap details, thanks for taking the time to document your work!!
