Thats the one I meant -- I've managed to do it with needle nose pliers too but you have to clamp it at just the right spot and pull like crazy -- not fun.
It may be easier to unbolt one of the pads and then pull the whole pad out with the springs in place? Or put the springs on in an easier order
I've only seen that tool at princess auto, a napa or something may have it or you could get lucky at cantire or home depot maybe :s
