Weird electrical problem? Please advise
93 318is
I was driving the other day, and the cluster just went crazy, all the lights came on, the dials were going all the way to the end (similar to the calibration that you can do while holding the reset km button), and went back to normal.
Again today it did the same thing, first it went off, I was doing about 90 and it dropped to zero, all turned off, and then it did the calibrating thing again and went back to normal. This does not affect the drive, doesn't shut off the car, or anything, it looks like just the cluster.
What the hell is going on!?

Alternator is on its way out, either voltage regulator or diodes, my cluster did the same thing I thought i.was seeing things. The guages would drop to zero and then go to normal without me touching anything. Next the alternator diodes completely died an that was that. I got a rebuild and installed a new regulator I bought, and it stopped

Belt chirp your talking about is likly the belt tensioner dieing on you.
Common for us 4 pots at the 200K + mark, not hard to change either.
