Considering the age of the car, I figured it may not necessarily be a "weird" question.

Age has nothing to do with it, do you think a brandnew Hyundai accent has a coded chip in the key?

Just because it's chipping doesn't mean you have to take your business to the stealership. My friend had a key made at pacific mall for 40 or 60 bucks (can't recall, it was 2 years ago). Go to pcm and inquire there.

Maybe it does, maybe it doesnt. That is not the point since I was specifically referring to my BMW. I just wanted to confirm if there weren't other possible alternatives then going to the dealer.....

98's have a chip coded for your car. Dealer is pretty much the only place that can code them.
The workaround is to get someone to laser cut another key for you and then pull the chip from the original key. When you get the chip out, place it near the ignition barrel.
You get 2 keys and everyone is happy.
Don't know any local places that can cut the keys though...

I called bmw to see how much a key would be for my e36 and they want $600! My dad paid 180 for his e30 key.

I paid something like $120 last year for another key for my e36 from the stealership... I didn't get the one with the light on it, just the standard key and it was that much. A little rediculous if you ask me.

I have blanks if anyone is interested, for the e36. They DO NOT have chips and need to be cut obviously.
$40 a blank, Pm me if you want one.
