location of e30 fuel pump?

Did the pre 88 production bmw 325 have an external fuel pump?
Some diagrams show one located above the fuel filter. To my knowledge I thought the unit was located in the tank?

Could someone clarify this for me? thank you.

Early models have a internal and external fuel pump, while late models only have one AFAIK.

could i use that to eliminate the second pump in my early model? or will it even match up to my early fuel tank

Take off the rear seat bench by grabbing and pulling up and on the rear passenger side there is a black cover you can remove. If you remove it you can gain access to the fuel pump. If you read the Bentley manual there is an easy test you can do with a multimeter to see if it is still good or not.

Yup.

The external one is actually the main pump and the internal one is the secondary transfer pump.

The car will still run with a dead internal one (for those that have 2 pumps obviously) but will put more strain on the main external pump.

exactly!! the one in the tank is just a suction pump to draw the fuel into the main external pump. As suggested it may strain the main one and eventually it will croak. :-)
