Quick transmission question ?

I just bought my first bmw with a blown 1.8l engine what i was wondering is if the 318is transmission is the same as the 325is, 328is, and m3? thanks alot in advance for all your help.

you want to swap the 4 banger with a proper engine like a m50 or s50. do a search ont he forums for m50 engine swap and you will find some writups on swap i am sure. i dont htink it is as cut and dry as you want it to be.

i now the transmission from a 328 and a M3 are the same but the one of a 318

you CAN use a 1.8 tranny. Need different linkage, pilot bearing and driveshaft. The 318 tranny's aren't very good, and the other components in the driveline (differential, driveshaft) dont really hold up to too much power.

If i were you i'd swap the motor/tranny/driveshaft/diff/halfshafts to 325/328/m3 spec.

Ya i have a differential driveshaft and half shafts just not the tranny, I've also heard that the tranny should bolt up. The main difference is the gear ratios. Thanks for the help guys. Also is there such thing as a 2.93 lsd ? The guy I'm buying the diff from states thats its a 2.93 lsd thanks again.

318 mtranny is the exact same Getrag250 tranny found in the 316 all the way up to the 323.
So can re-use your 318 D-shaft linkage and Diff (diffs have different ratio's).
If you use the 323 + Diff and 1/2 shafts you'll have to swap out the back 1/2 of the D-shaft as the 318's & 320's D-shaft is longer.
328 and the M3 use the ZF which would need a new D-shaft as the Guibo is larger and also the shifter rod is longer.
ALL E36 TANSMISSIONS HAVE THE SAME GEAR RATIOS 1-5 & R, EVEN THE EURO M3 6 SPEED (it's 6th is an OD).
