e36 does not always make ticking out of dash for turn signal

Every now and then, when I activate my turn signal, I do not get a ticking noise from my dash. I have confirmed this problem (turned my radio down, etc) and it definitely happens - although the occurnace is random.

Sometimes the sound resumes if i turn my steering wheel slightly (you know how the wheel ticks for every x degrees you turn, when you have your turn signal activated? Sometimes, after a steering wheel tick, the turn signal starts ticking again). I know my exterior lights are flashing properly and safely - but not having the consistent tick is annoying. Also, the turn signals on my dashboard light up just fine.

Any ideas?

If nobody answers, I'm going to just buy a turn signal relay. Have you tried replacing that yourself?
