Cool how much is a Rusty M3 (e46) worth?

i looked at a 2002 M3 the other day, which on paper looked good:

One owner car 6speed manual car
Dealer Serviced
Only 115,000km

but…

It was rusted out! It was a daily driver for the last 14 winters… and they had taken their toll..

Doors had already been replaced and fenders resprayed, but the trunk was rusted out, the rockers (just above the plastic moulding) had a thin strip of rust creeping through.. god knows what under the plastic covers, rear subframe mounts with a 'moderate' amount of rust all over them. And if I didn't have my paint tester I wouldn't have known that the 'rustfree' rear fenders were chock full of bondo by the wheel arches

The car looked good don't get me wrong, and drove really nice, but I couldn't get past thinking of all that rust everywhere waiting to creep out. Sure on a 2 grand 325ci its no problem but on an M3…

Would you guys even touch a car like this? What do you think its worth?

Ok so, since you get a deal on this rust bucket, buy cheap, swap drivetrain into e30

I wouldn't touch it unless you really don't give a $hit about what you drive...might as well buy a 323 and slap an M badge...Just spend some more and get something clean...

What are they asking? Sound's like a good fit for a track beater.... Pre-lightened too!!! (poor man's acid dip)

Better stay away from it and run. Rust is an irreversible process and unlike mechanical parts which can be repaired or replaced of course not without patience, effort, and most importantly money. Once you have rust, it will only go worse. Trying to nurse a 14 year old car back to its original glory is a big task.

if you think a rusty car is good for a racecar frame you've never built/worked on a racecar. i understand you meant this as a joke but this really can't be overstated.

No joke... I'm still looking for a track beater. I was thinking the rust on this particular car is cosmetic. My touring has spots of rust all over. I'm slowly fixing it. Structurally it seems sound except for one collapsed jack point.

I can totally see how stiff springs would put more stress on it after installing the Coilovers on the M5.

dont buy anything rusty for the track. i'd consider selling my m3 for a reasonable price, and it would be perfect for a build.

Well, my idea of a track beater would be some ratty thing. Something so cheap that it wouldn't bother me if I hit the wall. 300+ HP would be good...

I still haven't spun or gone off with the M5 so part of me feels I'm not pushing hard enough. Also, It's too nice to start gutting to save weight. Somebody was selling a really crappy looking M5 a while back...cheap - before I could even call the seller, it was sold.

The M3 in your sig looks too nice

nothing I hate more than rust. Not worth buying at any price unless all you want is the parts attached to it

Wtf... Way overpriced for a rusty car! Low mileage for that age means a lot of city stop and go....
