A very common problem with the E36's.
Mines went at 220,000km. I ended replacing with all aluminum parts.

Aluminum itself is quite resilient because when exposed to oxygen it actually creates a protective layer. The problem arises due to the other metals that are mixed to create alloys. Depending on the wheel manufacturer the content will vary so its not really the aluminum that corrodes/rusts but the other metals (especially if they are present in high concentrations).
