Modern engines in e34

Does anyone knows any e34 with modern engine under the hood.

For example, 525i with BMW M54 engine?
Or 518i with BMW N42 engine?

What do you think, is that possible, to make e34 more efficient yet more powerful?

Of course it's possible.

You can put in an N54/55 engine if you wanted to

The cost of a swap will outweigh any savings you might expect, unless you plan on driving it for 10-20 years! Just do like the rest of Europe and put propane on it! lol

On top of that, the E34 came with some of the MOST reliable engines ever. It will outlast ANY modern engine...

of course it will.
M50B25 has amazing sound and it's pointless to replace it.
i was thinking more of modern version of 518i because old engines in 518i are too slow

Yes, the m40 is garbage. To swap in something beyond m52 is going to be a new can of worms so to speak when dealing with electronics.

M54 is very similar physically to m50/52. You can even keep the same transmission (assuming manual) and oil pan/pump setup. Once you have DME flashed to remove security system it is only a matter of repinning wiring harness as far as I can tell.

This is an e30 swap but very similar. He first used Megasquirt standalone management but there are options to easily use factory DME.
