8 inch sub for small ported enclosure
i need bass in my car, i'm looking for the best shallow mount 8 inch sub to put in a small (.7 cu ft) enclosure. I'm going to build a top firing box with a port facing in the cabin. Whatever i put in there has to be loud, i've blown up enough stupid 6 inch cones trying to get SPL in the cabin. I'm pretty sure there's no way to do this without without the speaker touching the trim so i'm ok with having the box and woofer exposed.
please help, dont make me drive this car without bass another summer

:O I sympathize no bass is bad times!
I love my energy components, if you have the chance they deliver great sound for the price and size. My JBL sub is also tip-top after running for years.
Can't advise on small units as I haven't bought a sub in a while

Take a look at Image Dynamics Subwoofers for example the ID8D2 V.3 or ID8D4 V.3 in a ported box it needs 0.75 cu ft, RMS power is 50W-350W check the website for more info. Another cool feature is that all their subs can be used as a free air sub as well which has it's pro's and cons. Hope this helps.

350w rms would be the absolute least i'd wanna go for, i was thinking JL8w3w3-4 as its max is around 500 and can get higher spl in a ported box, but want more opinions

A JL8w3-4 is a hard sub to beat unless you go up and can get your hands on a JL 8W7, then there is the issue of having the space to make the appropriate box. JL8W7=1.0 Cu. Ft. (500W RMS) and JL8W3=0.35 Cu. Ft. (250W RMS). I believe that the ID8 sub still has a higher RMS rating (350W RMS) then the JL8w3w3-4 that you were referring to.

the ID8 looks great and has really good reviews. how big of a box would i need? i can only get about .35 cu ft, and ideally would like a port

If you need 0.35 cu ft for a ported box then you would need to go with the JL8W3v3-4 as the ID8D4 V.3 uses 0.75 cu ft for a ported enclosure. Even if you consider going with a sealed box set up the ID8D4 V.3 would still need 0.40 cu ft and the JL8W3v3-4 would need 0.30 cu ft.

Unfortunately I don't use winsd or have that vast knowledge to look at a box and do any type of verification on it, sorry.

The sub is cool but what I'm impressed with is the Zapco amps!!! Those were some good amps for the price based on what was on the market back then.
