Windshield Washer Fluid
I'm having problems with WS washer freezing up on me. I know there are boosters out there, but I've heard that diluted Methyl Hydrate can be used. has anyone done it ?? Opinions ??
Thanks

Might be a dumb question but are you still using the summer fluid?
Are you using the stuff designed for -40 temps?

Yes, using "winter" stuff...Wifey goes thru a ton of the stuff each winter (whatever lol) so I'm looking at a homemade batch using methyl hydrate to either enhance the fluid or build my own.

methyl hydrate is used as antifreeze so you can add to whatever you are using but methanol vapor is harmful when breathes in, read up more before you "kill" your wife..lol

I've traveled for business to NB on a regular basis in the past and it can get pretty cold there but only had issue with rental cars where washer fluid freezes. That only happened some 20 some years ago as some car rental companies back then put water in to save costs. They don't do that anymore for fear of getting sued if someone gets into a accident. But it sounds like as someone said your using summer rated fluid or someone put water in your BMer at some point. You should check with the wife, but be nice about it

Thanks all. I was heading to CT to get some good stuff, and had to stop at Superstore (Loblaws). In the foyer they had -35 for $1.27 a jug. Bought 10 jugs, should be good for this year, and maybe next. I'll add a half-cup of methyl hydrate to boost it a bit. Its rare to hit -35 here, but its been known to happen.
It's all good...

At the very least you could let your car warm up a few minutes, that should melt the washer fluid enough to be useable.
Safe driving !

Methanol, the main ingredient in windshield washing fluid, is extremely poisonous. As little as 2 tablespoons can be deadly to a child. About 2 to 8 ounces can be deadly for an adult. Blindness is common and often permanent despite medical care.

Buy good washer fluid, unless the trouble is worth $1.
