Oohh, I like those! Those will look nice if I end up doing another '02 after this one, which at this rate will be 2025 LOL. I keep getting sidetracked when I get a DD... At least this time its an E30 hogging the spotlight. I need to get it sorted before the heavy crap weather rolls in... because come April (which really isn't that far away), I WILL need a car again for track usage. This year was such a flop for me in terms of seat time!

Thanks Sam! I'm pleased to say that I am getting some progress on the cage again too! My new goal is to have the cagework wrapped up by Christmas time!
So... as far as updates go, I've acquired a replacement chair to sit in for this car, and it comes in the form of a Recaro. A Recaro SPG to be exact, and in great shape. Much thanks go out to Kurt for hooking this up!
I'm pleased to say my welding is coming along much more confidently... although I did try Tig welding for the first time last week at the PRI show at the Miller booth and promptly embarrassed myself... It is something I definitely want to develop more skill for as I am always envious of those that can lay down some killer welds. I guess I'll settle with my Mig work for now
So here are some half finished base plates for the front section of the cage. Going to fit them tomorrow, and drill some holes for the bolts to pass through.
The first of the A pillar bars fabbed up (actually I cheated, as it's a leftover from another cage project in the shop, and it fit the '02 relatively well, so I bent it a bit more and voila!) and starting to get the sleeve positioned up so I can see how it connects with the main hoop
And lastly, a shot of the fitment against the car. Pretty good so far! It will be a smidge higher when completed as its only sitting on one base plate for now. Hopefully I can complete this side by this week, and start bending the second A pillar bar... unfortunately, the car may have to be rolled outside for this as space is limited in the shop to maneuver these long lengths of pipe! Hopefully the weather is good towards the end of the week/weekend!

My plan is to make a full season of auto-x next year. I'm picking up a E36 328is off a buddy at work. Suspension, wheels and tires and that's about it.
This motivated me a bit more.

^ That's sick man, congrats!! I'd like to see how you manage that, you should be quick in it! You gotta post a progress thread for it, I'd like to see how it turns out.

I'm waiting on buddy to pick up a new car, then I can get it off him. He has a deposit.
We actually have a 72' 2002 Tii here at work in storage.

Just truckin' along here... got the driver side A Pillar bar fabbed up. Fits good enough to my liking... Also did a seat test fit. Surprisingly, the Recaro is much thinner than the Sparco that used to be in here, yet its roomier to sit in! Weird!!
Once the two A Pillar bars were secured to the main hoop, it was time to create the cross bar at the top to connect the two. At first, I did one straight across, but it appeared to hang pretty low and I didn't like it, so I redid it with a slight bend to jut up closer to the roof (and clear the rearview mirror)
Today, I got crackin' on the door bars since thats the final piece of the puzzle, and then everything can come back out of the car for final welding. They turned out great. I initally had planned for them to be a tad higher, but the upper bar came in contact with the door handle, so I had to lower it to clear.
The passenger side was more of an episode as somehow I miscalculated how much material I would need and came up short for the last door bar. So thats why I only have one passenger bar for the time being. Need to run over to the Metals store next week... they better have that crap in stock!

^ Thanks man... shall we start building a cage for your wagon yet?
Hows this for fit?! My measurements for the passenger door bars were pretty much bang on with the driver side. Look at the fit of the passenger side!
However, on the driver side, I did reposition the handle so its another 45* up from the normal spot to get a better grasp on it.
