customs brokers, clearing items from port of toronto

Anyone familiar with how to do this, where does the shipment go to be cleared ?
I'm sure anyone can do this themselves, what is involved ?

This is the info I had found when looking into it, but it was the process for UPS, not sure if you have this option with other shipping companies. Never actually ended up doing it though.

I found a broker who will clear my shipment for me for $75. This is an engine. While I could do it myself, I can't do it for 75 bucks.

You can do it yourself. Call in Canadian Customs they will tell you the steps required.

Yes, from UK.

So it will be coming by boat to Toronto, then where. Is the bonded warehouse right at the port, or do they ship it inland a bit ? I guess if I have to go down to pick it up, I might as well clear it myself. it's a matter of what my time is worth to me. 75 bucks seems pretty inexpensive. But I do realize that for them it is like 15 min work

they will call you as soon as it arrive with instructions on how you want to proceed. But I'm pretty sure its going to be more than $75. also you will have to pick it up yourself or arrange with your "broker" to deliver it.

75 + HST for brokerage, 6% for duty, 5% GST, I've used this broker before and that was the quote .

Ya, that's what I thought. I know he customs people are pretty good with private individuals clearing stuff, but they can also have bad days. I've been stuck at borders when they weren't so accommodating.
