Have you personally had bad experience with it? They shift extremely smooth, are faster than any human, and are just awesome on the track... and daily its a lot easier on you than manual when sitting on the 401 or gardiner... that's actually one of the biggest benefits of SMG. Had one for 6 years, 239,000km, heavy track, and its through one pump and one clutch (which actually didn't need to be replaced).
I don't even understand that last 'sentence'.

If BMW is going downhill by going to a sequential gearbox only, is the solution to move to a manufacturer who deals almost exclusively in auto slushboxes? It's the old man hood ornament isn't it?

M5's and M6's are not track cars, BMW is targeting clients who want high performance and comfortable DD with tons of luxury. They will receive NO backlash from losing the manual in this lineup, hate to tell you. Maybe in the M3 but I can't see them losing the manual in the M3 anytime soon.
