E36 Short Shifter install

Anyone know how to change a shifter in a E36 Coupe?

I've got a 99 M3 and Need to swap out the bushings for the Shifter lever (very sloppy). I figure great opportunity for a short shifter kit. I have read that the exhaust has to be removed etc. can someone confirm. Is there a way to do it from inside the car? Might be a stupid question but I am not sure.

Can't be done from inside only.

Probably easier to take it to shop if you don't know what your doing.
There are several parts that need to be refreshed to remove the sloppiness.

Thanks for that........it helps out a bit. Any idea how many hours of labour a shop would charge for such an upgrade?

Jay from Stance Factory might still nice enough to do the E60 Short shifter install with bushing refresh for 200 flat!

Not sure, I would guess around 1-2 hours.

Stance Factory had this OEM SSK special. Included a new lever, and other parts for refreshing for $200+tax installed.

Took me about two hours and I am not a mechanic. If you want to DIY I would highly recommend a lift.

I installed Richie's SSK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrQgNWz5-BQ. It was cheap and it is very short and notchy. A weighted knob is recommended.

jay did mine last year when the clutch was done. I replaced every bushing,washer and pin I could and it shifts butter smooth. I also added an acs weighted knob.
If you can get it for a couple of hundred installed that's a deal..

It would be nice if stance factory still has the 200 deal. I would be down for a ssk install.

I did mine on my own. I never lifted the car. Did the entire job from the interior of the car. I would recommend jacking it up and getting underneath to do it, it will make ur life easier getting that little clamp on. But it took me about an hour an half.

Stance factory uses the standard shifter for the e90, there is actually a short shift kit for the e90 which would shorten the shift up even more. P/N 25117546373

Has anyone tried this shifter?

you dont HAVE to remove the exhaust either.

its tight but do able

make sure you wrap the #9 linkage with a heavy solder and wrap it with tapes. this will help the throw feeling and nicer shifting. just a cheap affordable tricks.
