Perhaps a quirky opinion...

I'm partial to the stock BBS E30 M3 wheels, actually...

It's an iconic car, hailed (rightly) as the quintessential M-car. Why interfere with the wisdom of the Bavarians?

Well although i love the M3 to bits i am not a hardcore purist. And if i can improve on something i do it.
Although wheels are a matter of personal taste. Plus i will always keep the originals anyway.

I know I'm a little late chyming in here but...

It's funny how I have all sorts of rims for my e30, most of them are the same size, but not all of them weight the same. The best wheels that I've ever used on my e30 as far as road feel and agility have been the stock 15" BBS basketweaves. After weighing each of my rims sepated from the tires, it turns out the stock 15" weaves are the lightest. Everthing else is heavier, although generally cooler looking. Even a set of aftermarket BBS basketweaves I have that are exactly the same size and offset are two pounds heavier that the stock weave. The lightest things I would pick out of that bunch would be the Hartge splits. The TH lines look cool, but they've gotta weigh like 25LBS a piece. Unless you are wanting lighter wheels, I guess the work "improve" has it's limits.

I hear you and i agree. However there are few things that need to be considered.
First of all looks. As this is not going to be a track toy i dont mind if its not the lightest wheel.
Secondly what calipers i will use. At some point i will be getting bigger brakes and although i really like the Hartge they will limit my choices according to most people i spoke to.
Finally i will also keep my original wheels (16 inch bbs) for any track day that may occur or possibly go for som OZ Ultraleggeras later on just for track use as i know they are good since my friend uses them!
In any case the wheels have to wait for a bit as i am changing all panels at the moment (and i mean all panels - everything but the bonnet and doors are new, including the roof) so cost prohibits us to get the wheels right now.
