If its a first attendance you can send someone else with the papers, if they can't negotiate with the prosecutor to drop it they can set a court date and you can show up for that one. If its a court date I'd say don't risk it and just postpone it, you'll have to let them know 2-3 weeks in advance though. Make sure you go get that police report ASAP!
