engine swap dropping the subframe

has anyone done it this way. Looks to be easier if you have a hoist.

Only thing that looks like it might get in the way is the steering column ?

Haven't done it that way before, thought about it several times but removing the front end is really simple and allows excellent access.

If you go from the top and remove the rad support do you still have to take the manifold off to get the chain on the back of the engine ?

You'll want to remove the manifold regardless, to disconnect the wiring and heater hoses.

I think the subframe method is best if you're doing a very serious upgrade job, including suspension. Otherwise, just go from the top, especially with how easy it is to do on the E36, with no rad support to clear.

When I pulled the M52 I pulled the manifold off because I thought it was going to be a head job, but then decided to pull the whole thing out. I dropped the S52 in complete, connecting the heater hoses wasn't exactly fun but it was doable, especially if you planned it out before you put the motor in (which side to leave the hose attached to).

well my heater hose will be different since an S50B32 is going in to replace it

which means BTW my S52 is for sale
