Gas Gauge Problem

Bought a 2003 Z4 2.5i from a dealer and the gas gauge didn't work; it only would move to half full when it was filled.
The dealer got a new sender unit (connected to the fuel pump - more than $400) but on further inspection the mechanic saw another sender in the tank.
When he questioned the BMW dealership about this, they told him it is a programming problem.
The dealer has been fine paying for everything, but I am left wondering if this is a common problem with the Z4, and if it is a programming problem

Since lots have looked at my post and no one has responded, I feel I might as well update this
In the end, the gas tank of my Z4 had to be replaced. It seems that one sensor is in the tank, and if this sensor doesnt work, you need to replace the fuel tank.
The dealer did this at his cost. I was really happy because the BMW dealership said it would be a four to six hour job.

Ugh. I have the same problem on my e46 and this is NOT what I wanted to hear :p
